We were super excited when we learned that Studio Starck+ had specified Elizabeth wallcovering for Curio Collections’ Maison Heler in Metz. Following the reveal at the end of March of this nine-story hotel topped with a 19th century mansion, we are delighted to be able to share images of the fabulous interior of ‘La Maison de Manfred’.
As the surreal story, conceived by Starck, goes, la Maison de Manfred is a 19th Century metal clad mansion set in beautiful grounds, inherited by Manfred Heler. All is going well for him, until alone in the house he gets bored and lets his imagination get the better of him. He is an extraordinarily rigorous and inventive man, who doesn’t necessarily succeed in everything he undertakes, but its always done with intelligence, and poetry, guided by a naïve desire to create meticulously at all costs. As he dreams, the earth trembles and the house was thrust into the air, with Heler inside, and found itself atop a nine-storey monolithic Tower.
The mansion interiors were designed to evoke the 19th Century spaces of Heler’s fictional home, making Lincrusta the perfect fit. The inviting restaurant is reminiscent of a family dining room. Elizabeth painted in velvety green adds to the ambiance. The showstopper of this space are 19 stained glass windows created by Ara Starck, which drench the space with a cathedral of light.
Maison Heler is am immersive experience between dream and reality. Situated in the dynamic amphitheatre district in Metz, resonating with its equally extraordinary neighbour, the Pompidou Centre, Metz, the hotel offers a unique hospitality experience, with 104 bedrooms and suites on floors 2-8. 2 restaurants, 2 bars and event spaces.
In contrast to the Manfred’s house, styled on the typical 19th century mansion of the Alsace, the bedrooms have ‘an almost spartan spirit’ explains Starck. “Stripped of any superficiality, where each material asserts its own colour: the white of cotton, the grey of concrete on the ceiling and walls.”
The installation and decoration of the Lincrusta was beautifully executed by Passion Peinture, Woippy and Metz.
