‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, featuring Ewan McGregor, is about fictional character Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat who is condemned by Communists to spend the rest of his life confined in the Metropol, the capital’s most glamorous hotel across the street from the Kremlin. The story begins in 1922 as Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit who has never worked a day in his life is sentenced to live in an attic room inside the hotel while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history play out.
John McHugh Design oversaw all construction and design finishes, also stepping in to assist set decoration with several key prop makes and dressing requirements.
A Gentleman in Moscow’s storyline plays out over an historic 30 year timeline, and the premise of the visual look was to combine traditional Russian Imperialistic style with Art Nouveau and blend in early Deco influences. Lincrusta was the perfect choice for to bring this era to life. The main reception counter has been wrapped in our ‘Art Nouveau Dado’ which travels through the main lobby and bar in the film.

In “A Gentleman in Moscow,” the Shaplin Bar is a prominent and cherished location within the Hotel Metropol; a setting that plays a significant role in the novel, particularly for the protagonist, Count Alexander Rostov. The bar, named after the great opera singer, is a place where Count Rostov spends a considerable amount of time, both for drinks and for meals. It’s a space that allows him to observe the world around him and interact with various characters. Our timeless design ‘Kelmscott’ was perfect as the backdrop for the passage of time in the film, featured in panels around the room.
